A special blend for special occasions

Old St. Croix collaborates with the board of directors of Albert Heinrich Riise and Wife’s Family Scholarship on the digitization of the comprehensive family archive so that it can be of benefit to the public. In addition, we financially support a number of scholarships, which are to be awarded to family members in education.

Every five years, the family holds a party at Albert Heinrich’s birthday. Old St. Croix contributes with entertainment, cocktails and of course a tasting. On the occasion of the family party in 2015, we developed a very special blend, Old St. Croix Family Reserve, which was a great success. This collector’s item is also available in selected stores.

A Toast to Tradition

Celebrating the 24th Riise Family Gathering

On 13th September 2025, the Riise family held their 24th reunion. To support the celebration, Old St. Croix offered a welcome drink and hosted a tasting of selected blends — including the Family Reserve. To round off the evening, gift bags were given to every adult family member, including a Legacy Reserve – a tasteful end to a truly special day!

Albert Heinrich Riise family scholarship funds Istanbul study trip

Each year, Old St. Croix awards an educational grant to a member of the Riise Family. This year, the grant was awarded to the great-great-great-great-grandson of Albert Heinrich Riise. Albert studies Electronic Music & Sound Art at the Danish National Academy of Music and will use the grant for a study trip to Istanbul. We wish you fair winds and good sound, Albert!

The history of
Albert Heinrich Riise

In June 1838, the Danish Government officially appointed Albert Heinrich Riise as the exclusive pharmacist for the caribbean island, Saint Thomas, part of the former Danish West Indies. This granted him monopoly status to produce alcohol in his pharmacy.

Initially, Albert developed rum and bitters as medicine for stomach ills. However, his rum soon gained popularity beyond its medical function, and in 1893 he received an International Medal at the World Exhibition in Chicago. A.H. Riise created strong brands such as “Old St. Croix”, “Riises Guava Rum” and “A.H. Riise Rum”.

He was awarded many honorary positions on the island of St. Thomas. At one point he was Director of the National Bank of St. Thomas and was made Knight of the Order of Dannebrog in 1860.

With the return to the name Old St. Croix, we take one step back – to take two steps forward. The name revives the original vision that inspired Albert Heinrich Riise, who, more than 150 years ago, brought Danish West Indian rum to the world.

Old St. Croix Royal Danish Navy - Naval Cadet was created in collaboration with the Cadet Association of the Royal Danish Naval Academy – the world’s oldest naval officer school, founded in 1701.

Old St. Croix Royal Danish Navy - Frogman was created as a tribute to the Danish Frogman Corps – an elite unit whose courage and strength help secure the safety we often take for granted.

Navy Strength

Throughout history, spirits and seafaring have gone hand in hand—along with a fair share of trickery and dilution. To ensure quality, sailors came up with a simple test: they poured the spirit onto gunpowder and lit it.

Navy Bitter
