Enjoying this blend means supporting the preservation of an iconic piece of Danish maritime heritage – the Frigate Jylland. As one of the world’s largest and oldest wooden warships, it completed five voyages to the Danish West Indies between 1871 and 1887. According to legend, the crew received a daily ration of spirits from Albert Heinrich Riise himself. In 2025, sales of Fregatten Jylland generated DKK 36,000, which was donated to the restoration of the historic museum ship. In total, more than DKK 206,000 (27,500 euros) has been contributed to the cause.

The Frigate Jylland is part of our Royal Danish Navy Collection – a series of blends composed from casks sourced from respected distilleries in the Caribbean and Central America. Slow fermentation and distillation provide depth and character, further refined through aging in both young and old oak casks. After maturation, the strength is gently reduced to 45% – just enough to stay the course and warm you right through to the captain’s quarters. A smooth, characterful navy blend with history in every drop.
Since 1994, the Frigate Jylland has been drydocked in the Danish town of Ebeltoft. Donations from foundations and support projects like this blend help fund its ongoing preservation. We highly recommend a visit to this remarkable piece of maritime heritage and cultural history.

Throughout history, spirits and seafaring have gone hand in hand—along with a fair share of trickery and dilution. To ensure quality, sailors came up with a simple test: they poured the spirit onto gunpowder and lit it.

The frigate played a central role in the history of the Danish navy and visited the Danish West Indian Islands five times, where the pharmacist Albert Heinrich Riise founded his pharmacy. “This historical connection inspires us to support the preservation of the Frigate Jylland so that future generations can appreciate and learn from our shared past. We are proud to be able to contribute to the important restoration work and thank all Old St. Croix fans who have bought a bottle of ‘Fregatten Jylland‘ and thus contributed to the donation,” says the director of Old St. Croix, Micheal Bielefeldt.

With the name change from A.H. Riise to Old St. Croix, we’re taking one step back – to take two steps forward. With the new name, we’re reviving the original vision that inspired Albert Heinrich Riise more than 150 years ago, when he made Danish West Indian rum known far beyond the shores of the islands.
