In the late 1800s, a special friendship bloomed in the Danish West Indies—between two young men: the future King Haakon VII of Norway and Valdemar Riise, son of pharmacist Albert Heinrich Riise. They met for the first time in 1886, when the young Prince Carl sailed to the islands as a naval cadet. During his two visits, he became a welcome guest in the Riise family home, and their friendship lasted a lifetime.
First comes vanilla, coconut and butter caramel. Later there is a hint of caramelised apple cake with a slightly burnt edge and discrete floral note of lavendar.
The primary aromatic notes are also discernible in the taste, with the coconut coming to the forefront.
The vanilla and butter caramel linger long, together with a hint of orange peel, which balances the spirit very well indeed.

Old St. Croix XO Reserve – King Haakon is a tribute to that friendship and to their lifelong love for the sea and the West Indies. The blend is composed of carefully selected casks from renowned distilleries in the Caribbean and Central America. Slow aging in oak barrels creates a golden, rounded, and well-balanced spirit with notes of sweetness, richness, and a depth worthy of its story. The nose reveals warm, dark aromas and a hint of tropical spice. The palate is full-bodied and elegant, with a soft finish and long, complex aftertaste.
King Haakon VII of Norway (1872–1957) began his life as Prince Carl of Denmark and pursued a career in the Royal Danish Navy. His first visit to the West Indies took place in 1886, when, as a 14-year-old cadet, he sailed aboard the legendary Danish warship “Frigate Jylland.” Today, the frigate serves as a museum ship and is financially supported by Old St. Croix Spirits.
In 2013, we marked 175 years since Danish pharmacist Albert Heinrich Riise first opened his Apothecary Hall on Saint Thomas in the Danish West Indies.

150 years ago, A.H. Riise put Danish rum from the West Indies on the world map under the trademark “Old St. Croix”. The island of St. Croix – The Garden of the West Indies – was the center of cultivation of sugarcane and the production of sugar in the Danish West Indies from the early 1700s. The by-product molasses was used to make rum. To this day, the heart of our blends continues to be distilled on molasses.
