Collecting Old St. Croix blends involves the pursuit of unique and rare bottles, combining personal enjoyment with the potential for investment. For enthusiasts, it’s about acquiring distinct tastes and sharing them from the bar cupboard with friends. Some variants, such as the A.H. Riise Platinum, Centennial, and Founders series, have shown substantial increases in value over time, making them not only a pleasure to own but also a smart addition to any collection.

Paths to a personal collection
Every Old St. Croix collector has their own story and experience with Old St. Croix – and their favourites among the many blends.
Some collect broadly to have one of each for tastings with friends. Others chase uniqueness, coveting all Limited Editions or the Non Plus Ultra Series, where each bottle is numbered. Then, some seek out the truly unique discontinued bottles that won’t be produced again.
However, they all share the joy of looking at their bottles, putting them on display in elegant cabinets, and showing them off to friends. Rum bottles can be incredibly beautiful and decorative, offering a visual feast in and of themselves.

Which Old St. Croix bottles are collectibles?
Most Riise and Old St. Croix collectors enjoy tasting their collections and offering friends a remarkable experience. Therefore, they often acquire multiple bottles when they find a new favorite. The gems of the collection are more for visual enjoyment than taste, as some bottles may be rare finds. This includes sold-out editions or those that have been discontinued from production.
Among these coveted collectibles are the XO Reserve Single Barrel, XO Sauternes Cask, Non Plus Ultra Sauternes Cask, and the Royal Danish Navy Frogman at 58% strength.
Others, like the Centennial Celebration, Platinum Reserve, Founders Reserve 1, Founders Reserve 2, and Founders Reserve 3, may be sold out from Old St. Croix but can still be found in select stores, often at a premium price.
The 50cl bottle “Royal Danish Navy Westindian Bitter” will also be a fitting addition to most collections, having been discontinued from production.

Protect your bottles
How to store your collection
Rum is easier to store than wine, which requires strict temperature and humidity control. With alcohol levels typically above 40%, rum ages well and boasts a long shelf life. But there are still principles to follow, especially if you’re preserving bottles as investments:
- Rum and other spirits are best kept at room temperature, around 18-22°C, with normal humidity.
- Avoid direct sunlight, as UV light can affect the contents and fade labels. A cupboard, cellar, or windowless storage room is ideal.
- Unlike wine, spirit bottles should be stored upright to avoid prolonged alcohol and cork contact, which can alter flavors.
- Keep the bottle sealed and unopened, as oxygen can affect taste.
- Always keep the original gift box, as it can add to the bottle’s collector’s value.
- Preserve receipts and documentation as proof of the bottle’s authenticity.

- Attend an Old St. Croix tasting to taste as many variants as possible!
